A laser treatment for skin may sound a little bit ‘sci-fi’, but there’s nothing fictional about its cutting-edge results. In fact, a facial lasers are able to treat all manner of skin concerns, from acne scarring to sun damage.
But, how do these skin lasers work? And what can you expect from your first treatment? Here’s your glow-to guide to plumped-up radiant skin, courtesy of clever light therapy…
Laser Facials at Mallucci London
The laser treatment machine we use, called Cynosure Icon™, has a number of ‘filters’ that change the way the light scatters on your skin, allowing it to target specific structures. . For example, when your Mallucci London expert is giving you a laser treatment for acne scars, the filter will convert the light to the correct wavelength for blitzing the excess red pigment. Similarly, for sun damage, the laser will target melanin, while for wrinkles, it will focus on supporting the internal structure of your skin.
1. Laser Treatment for Acne Scars
For those who have overcome acne but are left with visible scarring, the laser will break down the red and pink tones to reveal a clear, calm, even skin tone. Best of all, you can use it on both new and old scars, so it’s never too early or too late to start tackling an uneven complexion.
2. Laser Removal of Pigmentation
Dark spots and pigmentation are common in sun damaged skin; they happen when your skin cells produce too much melanin in patches, resulting in a mottled or freckled appearance. The laser can break the melanin down, causing the spots to scab over for a few days, before they peel off to reveal a more radiant, uniform skin tone.
3. Laser Treatment for Wrinkles
By promoting the production of collagen and elastin – the building blocks of healthy skin – your laser skin treatment can be used to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and crepey texture. From treatment to treatment, your complexion will gradually appear plumper, tighter and rejuvenated, resulting in a more youthful-looking complexion.
Who Can and Can’t Have Laser Skin Treatments?
Ahead of your first laser skin appointment, book in for a Mallucci London consultation to discover if it’s the right treatment for your skin type. The machine isn’t suitable for darker skin, as it can cause skin damage or discolouration. You should also avoid treatment if you have active acne breakouts, an active tan or if you’ve been on Accutane in the past six months or Roaccutane in the past year.
What Does a Laser Skin Treatment Feel Like?
If you’ve ever had laser hair removal, you’ll be familiar with the sensation; having the light pass over your skin feels a little like the flicking of tiny elastic bands. You will experience a touch of warmth and some post-facial redness. This usually goes away within around 90 minutes.
Before and During Your Laser Skin Treatment
On the day of your laser treatment at Mallucci London, arrive with no makeup on, so we can carry out a Visia Skin Analysis. This complimentary service involves scanning your skin to detect pore size, sun damage, texture, pigmentation and wrinkles, leaving us with a ‘blueprint’ for your skin journey. The analysis is carried out every three months, allowing you to see your skin’s progress over the course of your treatment plan. Gradually, dark spots, scarring and fine lines will disappear.
After Your Laser Skin Treatment
For five days post-laser, swap photosensitive skin treatments (like retinol) for gentle, soothing cleansers and moisturisers that won’t irritate. We typically recommend the ZO Skin Health collection; a medical-grade range steeped in science, which will keep your complexion calm and balanced after facial lasers – and beyond. Avoid picking at your skin, too. If sun damage spots are peeling, it’s tempting to hurry them along, but this will only lead to additional scarring. Simply let the laser work its magic.
How Many Laser Skin Treatments Will I Need?
We recommend a course of three facial lasers to address your skin concerns. The first will be the most intense, kickstarting your treatment with a high-performance blast. The second is less potent, but gives the effects of your laser skin treatment a boost. Then, finally, a third session will polish off your complexion to reveal fresh, glowing skin.
